Hello friend,
I hope your week is going well. Mine’s been busy, but in that focused, productive, I’m getting exactly what I need to get done, way. How about you?
It isn’t always this way
First let me tell you that not all of my weeks are like this and when I tell you I needed a week like this, I mean it.
Nothing bad was happening, and I definitely had a great week. However, not much else has felt like it was clicking. There was motion, but it wasn’t directed towards anything. There was intention, but it wasn’t aligned with a strategy. Truth be told, I was growing a bit tired and restless. It felt like a slump and it took a bit of doing to see my way clear. Does this ever happen to you?
Coaching your way out of it.
Aside from a few trusted advisors, I don’t like talking when things aren’t going well and even with them, I’m not very chatty. I make small talk. I smile and nod. Inside though, the anxiety is building, my brain goes into worry cycles, and then…I start plotting a way out.
It’s never easy, but it always helps to know I’ve been through slumps before and always find my way out.
Here are five tips for coaching yourself out.
1. Reduce the noise - When things aren’t going well, we tend to fill our plates with activities that feel like work. We start trying all sorts of new methods to keep our minds busy and avoid facing the harsh realities. Pick only the most critical activities to getting back on track and work on them.
2. Forget how far you’ve fallen - Worrying about the size of the hole you’re in does nothing to help you climb out. Get back to
3. Get back to basics - Simplify. Our larger goals will come if we do what we need to do today. If you’re in sales, you need to call on leads. You need to set meetings. You need to follow-up. You need to ask for the sale. Stick to the most basic actions.
4. Find your plan and follow it - Chances are you already know what to do, but for some reason, you were knocked off your game. Whatever the plan, don’t spend time wondering if it is the right one or the wrong one, get back to it. Build consistency and then you can choose what to add or change.
5. Decide today, Do tomorrow - Make your decisions about what you will do OUT of the moment, so you can do the work IN the moment. Always plan out 2-3 of the most critical parts of your day the night before.
Maybe One More….
Build on small successes - Sometimes just finishing a small project is enough to generate some momentum. If your nutrition has fallen off, eat a good breakfast and mould from there. If you’ve missed a few workouts, even a short one today can start a chain reaction.
If it helps, write those tips down. Use your own words if you have to. Pin them to the wall and when you start to slump, coach yourself through it.
